The radio show is developed by the Native Education and Health Initiative, Inc.
The broadcast encompasses a broad range of health issues, viewed in a holistic context in keeping with traditional Native American perspectives. The program provides practical material for everyone in Indian Country. Special attention is given to topics of current interest: e.g., applying traditional First Nation health practices today; Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome as it relates to mistreated people groups; diabetes treatment (as well as preventing diabetes among Native American youth); new hope for addictions; cultivating mental health when faced with difficulties; environmental health; and the value of tribal communities in promoting health.
Host for the broadcast, David DeRose, MD, MPH is currently President of CompassHealth, Inc. In that capacity he helps individuals, organizations, and communities maximize their health through lectures, seminars, workshops, written materials, and radio and television programming. He is a board-certified specialist in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine. He also holds a Masters of Public Health degree with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Health Education. Dr. DeRose’s research has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Annals of Epidemiology, and Preventive Medicine.
He has worked closely with many Native Americans including tribal leaders in an attempt to help address health problems in Indian Country. His treatment strategies are based on natural therapies that provide new hope for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Dr. DeRose can also relate well to urban Indians. He was born in Chicago, practiced medicine in the New York City area, and for four years directed community-oriented preventive medicine programs for one of America’s largest hospital systems—Florida Hospital—based in Orlando, Florida.
